Instead of going to Aaron Heilmen, the Mets go to the bullpen and go with Chad Bradford. Bradford is able to keep the Cardinals offense at bay, and the game remains tied. Following a incredible catch by Endy Chavez robbing Scott Spiezo of a sure home run. Inpsired by this amazing play, Mets take a 2-1 lead in the 8th off a solo homer by Carlos Delgado. The big first basemens homer gives the Mets the lead they need, and with Billy Wagner coming into the game in the 9th the Mets are able to retire the Cardinal side. The Mets will go on to play the Detroit Tigers in the 2006 World Series.

Chavezs catch would be remembered in Mets lore by Mets fan throughout history as the play that sealed the deal and lifted the Mets into the World Series.

The Daily Sports News described the catch as a miracle play, and through Chavez and Delgado the Mets season would continue. They face the formiddble Detroit Tigers who handily swept the AL West Champion Oakland A's 4-0 in the ALCS, and defeated the mighty New York Yankees 4-1 in the ALCS.

Game 1

Kenny Rogers scoreless streak of 14 consecutive innings came to a close. In the first inning Mets Shortstop Jose Reyes lead off with a shot to right field. An error by Tigers Center Fielder Curtis Granderson allowed Reyes to advance to third. A sacrifice fly by mets Catcher Paul Lo Duca openend the gates for a 7 run Met rally in the first inning off a double to Carlos Delgado and a two run shot by Mets Third Basemen David Wright. The Tigers went to their bullpen after Rogers allowed three runs and went with Joel Zumaya. The hardthrowing right hander was unable to stop the bleeding as the Mets would score four more runs in the inning. The Mets took a 7-0 lead and never looked back. Although the Tigers were able to score 2 runs off Martinez by a two run shot by Third Basemen Brandon Inge, they were unable to make up the large five run deficit. The Mets won Game 1 by a score of 7-2.

Game 2

The tigers went with Jeremy Bonderman, a hard throwing right hander known for his ability to strike out batters but prone to giving up walks and allowing for large rallies. The Mets went with aging Veteran Tom Glavine. The Mets took an early lead in the top of the 4th, as Mets Second Basemen Jose Valentin openend the gates with a solo homer. Bonderman maneged to strikeout Right Fielder Shawn Green yet gave up a single to NLCS hero Endy Chavez. Followed by a double to right field by Jose Reyes (his 3rd hit in 6 at bats) the Mets never gave up their lead and rocked Bonderman for 3runs. In the 5th, they repeated the process as Carlos Delgado and David Wright hit back to back homers. Bonderman was removed, as Detroits starting pitchers continued to struggle against the Mets. Tom Glavine however, faced troubles oif his own. Giving up a single to second basemen pacido Polanco, the Tigers put two runs on the board off a 2 run shot by Pudge Rodriguez. Tigers Left Fielder Craig Monroe slammed another dinger, and Glavine was removed. The Mets pulled Oliver Perez from the bullpen, Perez gave up just 1 run and pitched the final 4 innings. The Mets won by a score of 5-3.
